Dignity and Respect Campaign
Creating an inclusive and welcoming environment is a key component of the MGH Institute’s Core Values and major focus of the Institute’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council. Diversity and inclusive excellence are integral to our learning and work environment, and each of us through our words, attitudes, and behaviors plays an important role in contributing to our community environment.
This is the fifth consecutive year the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council has sponsored a month-long Dignity & Respect Campaign. The Dignity & Respect Campaign is designed to join individuals, community leaders, organizations, educational institutions, business partners, family, and friends under the common notion that inclusiveness begins with the core belief that everyone deserves dignity and respect.
Since its inception at the University of Pittsburg Medical Center (UPMC), numerous organizations and communities have been inspired by the campaign, and to date, more than 244,000 individuals have taken the Dignity and Respect Pledge. The campaign emphasizes 30 simple, yet powerful, daily practice tips, such as "Say 'Hello’," "Be flexible," "Listen," and "Treat others the way they want to be treated" — reminders of practical behaviors and gestures that make our lives, and the lives of those around us, enriching and inclusive.
Each day during the month-long campaign, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council shares tips via the IHP Daily News, campus TV monitors and social media channels. Practice tips brochures are also available around campus. We encourage you to join us in becoming familiar with and practicing these tips. The more we practice them, the more we’ll become aware of how important our words and actions are in fostering a welcoming and inclusive campus climate. We also encourage you to join us in taking the Institute’s Dignity & Respect Pledge.
We are fortunate to be a part of a community where dignity and respect are already core to what we believe and do, but there is always room to do even more, individually and collectively. Together, we can ALL work to achieve a richer and more inclusive community.
