Community Engagement: National Parks Service

The National Parks Service in the Charlestown Navy Yard is one of the MGH Institute's community partners. School of Nursing students have done a number of community engagements with the NPS over the years.

Recently five ABSN students in the community health practicum (NS 521) participated in three days of shadowing various roles within the National Parks Service: Participating in a mock medical emergency at Bunker Hill Monument, performing the physical fitness exam required to be a National Parks Service ranger, etc. This allowed the students to perform a comprehensive assessment of this population and gain a better understanding of health risks and needs. The information acquired allowed the students to execute a health fair that addressed the individual needs of the National Park Service population.

Following on this health assessment, ABSN community health students will be running a Wellness group on stress reduction and sleep for the National Parks Service in the spring.

Hear the five students – Carly Furbush, Emma Yurkosky, Angela Calhoun, Emily Brouillette, and Cliff Derius – describe their experience with the NPS in their own words. View them in order to get the best sense of the project.
