Clinical Education: Doctor of Occupational Therapy

The MGH Institute is the only degree-granting affiliate of Mass General Brigham, New England’s largest health network. As such, OTD students have unparalleled access to Harvard Medical School teaching hospitals: Brigham and Woman’s, Massachusetts General, and Spaulding Rehabilitation, along with Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and Boston Children’s Hospital, and more than 200 other locations.

Full- and part-time fieldwork experiences are integrated at every stage of the curriculum, allowing students to continually connect theory with practice. Fieldwork is completed in a variety of clinical and practice settings (e.g., acute care, rehab, school-based practice, community). Led by faculty and practicing clinicians who serve as mentors, students are exposed to a variety of clients across the lifespan in a variety of settings. In some instances, students may need a car to access clinical placements.

The OTD program’s focus on experiential learning, in addition to the Institute’s innovative IMPACT Practice interprofessional education curriculum, facilitates critical thinking, communication skills, ethical reasoning, and team-based problem-solving. Participating in these and other learning opportunities produces graduates who are better prepared for fieldwork training and can deliver care with increased confidence.
