Clinical Education: Communication Sciences and Disorders
The MGH Institute is the only degree-granting affiliate of Mass General Brigham, New England’s largest health network. As such, SLP students have unparalleled access to Harvard Medical School teaching hospitals: Brigham and Woman’s, Massachusetts General, and Spaulding Rehabilitation, along with Boston Children’s Hospital, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Boston Public Schools, Winthrop Public Schools, and more than 200 other locations.
In addition, SLP students also have their two initial in-house practica, involving working with developmental speech-language and reading problems, in the school’s Speech, Language and Literacy Center (SLCC). Some students also work with clients in the Aphasia Center within the SLLC. In some instances students may need a car to access clinical placements.
The SLP program’s focus on experiential learning, in addition to the Institute’s innovative IMPACT Practice interprofessional education curriculum, facilitates critical thinking, communication skills, ethical reasoning, and team-based problem-solving. Participating in these and other learning opportunities produces graduates who are prepared to succeed in today’s increasingly complex health care environment.
