The Doctor of Physical Therapy program participates in the Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service (PTCAS). All students are required to apply online through PTCAS.

 


 

Applying to the MGH Institute of Health Professions is a 2-part process, as follows:

 

1. Items to submit directly to PTCAS:

  • Application with application fee
  • Official Transcripts
  • Reference letters
  • Statement of Intent/School Specific Questions
  • Physical Therapy observation hours
  • GRE Test Score (PTCAS GRE program code: 7615)

2. Information to submit directly to MGH Institute of Health Professions Office of Student Affairs:

  • Complete and submit our supplemental application
  • Any coursework and subsequent transcripts that become available after your file has been verified and released to us by PTCAS.

Degree

Bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university.

Prerequisites for Students Applying for Summer 2016

Completion of the following prerequisite courses with a grade of C or better is required for admission:

  • Anatomy & Physiology I (1 semester, with lab)
  • Anatomy & Physiology II (1 semester) Separate courses in anatomy and physiology can fulfill this course sequence requirement.
  • Biology (1 semester, no lab required)
  • Exercise Physiology
  • Chemistry (2 semesters, with lab)*
  • Physics (2 semesters, with lab)
  • Developmental or Child Psychology (1 course)
  • Abnormal or General Psychology (1 course)
  • Statistics (including inferential statistics)

Applicants may have up to two prerequisite courses in progress and/or outstanding the spring semester prior to matriculation.

Prerequisites for Students Applying for Summer 2017

Completion of the following prerequisite courses with a grade of C or better is required for admission:

  • Anatomy & Physiology I and II each with labs (2 semesters of A&P) Separate courses in anatomy and physiology, each with labs, can fulfill this course sequence requirement.
  • Biology (1 semester, no lab required)
  • Exercise Physiology
  • Chemistry (2 semesters, with lab)*
  • Physics (2 semesters, with lab)
  • Developmental or Child Psychology (1 course)
  • Abnormal or General Psychology (1 course)
  • Statistics (including inferential statistics)

Applicants may have up to two prerequisite courses in progress and/or outstanding the spring semester prior to matriculation.

* Please note that the HCHEM 452-DL course that we offer at the Institute does not meet this chemistry requirement

Applicants may be asked to submit mid-term reports for certain prerequisite courses. All prerequisite courses must be satisfactorily completed prior to matriculation. Prerequisite credit cannot be given for courses with a grade of Pass/Fail.

All prerequisite courses must have been taken at an institution that is accredited by one of the six regional accrediting bodies. Please refer to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation website for additional information.

Applicants with questions about prerequisite course equivalency and/or acceptability should complete and submit the DPT Prerequisite Inquiry Form. Upon submission of the form, replies can be expected by email in 7-10 business days.

Applicants who are currently in the process of completing prerequisite courses are still encouraged to apply.

 

Standardized Tests

GRE

The General Test is required for admission and must have been taken within 5 years of application. An official score report should be sent directly to PTCAS from ETS (www.ets.org).  The Institution code for MGHIHP Department of Physical Therapy is 7615.

TOEFL

Proficient command of spoken and written English is required for admission. Applicants whose first language is not English and/or whose undergraduate education was completed in a non-English speaking country are required to take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). The test must have been taken within two years of the application deadline, with a minimum overall score of 80 (internet-based test).

The institution code for the MGH Institute of Health Professions is 3513. Score reports can be obtained by contacting Educational Testing Service (ETS).

The TOEFL requirement is waived for applicants who are a native citizen of or received a baccalaureate degree from one of the following countries: United States*, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada (except Quebec).

* U.S. Citizenship does not automatically exempt an applicant from taking the TOEFL if the applicant's first language is not English.

Official Transcripts

Please refer to our program page in PTCAS for specific information. All official transcripts should be submitted directly to PTCAS.

 

Foreign Transcripts: Applicants who did not receive an undergraduate or graduate degree in the United States are required to have their degree transcript evaluated by World Education Services (WES). This credential evaluation must document minimum equivalency of a U.S. baccalaureate and/or a U.S. masters degree or higher. When requesting a transcript evaluation, please request a "course-by-course" evaluation with grades.

Interview

Invitations for interviews will be sent to qualified applicants between mid-December to mid-January. Interviews will be scheduled on Saturdays in late January/early February at our campus in the Charlestown Navy Yard.

Interview dates for the 2016 admission cycle will be on January 30, 2016 & February 6, 2016. Interviews are by invitation only.

We communicate all admissions-related information by email and/or by logging into the MGH Institute of Health Professions online supplemental application portal. Please be sure that we are notified of any changes to your email address.

Important Immunization Requirement for all Applicants

The MGH Institute, like most institutions of higher education, requires completion of the Hepatitis B immunization series prior to matriculation. The 3 dose series must be initiated prior to December 1st preceding intended June matriculation. It is important to note that initiation of the series must occur prior to notification of an invitation to interview or you will be ineligible for matriculation.
