THE HILL CAMPAIGN FOR LITERACY

The HILL is embarking on a five-year, $5 million Campaign for Literacy. The HILL Campaign for Literacy is designed to transform schools so that HILL schools and teachers possess the knowledge and skills they need to teach all children to read. HILL will partner with like-minded professional development organizations and transfer the knowledge and skills of the HILL by creating Centers of Excellence across the country.

HILL Campaign for Literacy: Why the HILL?

HILL Schools are Replicable
The HILL has captured an important spot in the national literacy landscape. Very few teacher training organizations can say that their data is consistent across all types of demographic challenges: urban, rural and suburban schools. The HILL can. Schools with large numbers of high poverty, second language learners have been able to produce reliable results over time when they work in tandem with the HILL.

Teaching Reading IS Rocket Science
Contrary to popular thinking, achieving literacy is a complex process. The teaching of reading is an ongoing study for many classroom teachers. One thing all teachers want to do is to teach well. But, with a classroom full of struggling readers, teachers cannot know what each child needs without a lot of knowledge and experience. As one of the MGH Institute of Health Professions Communication Sciences faculty members has said, “There are no roadmaps or ‘magic bullet’ reading programs that are ‘one size fits all’.  Children have individual needs.” The HILL can train teachers, coaches and administrators how to think critically about teaching each child to learn to read.

Share Success
The HILL is a sustainable organization that has developed a unique model effective at helping hundreds and thousands of children become successful readers. The HILL Campaign for Literacy is designed to share our success: to share our “trade secrets” with other training organizations, so that more children can learn to read and more teachers can be successful at their jobs.

The Hanson Initiative for Language & Literacy (HILL) is working to address this gap. The HILL partners with schools and educators in low-income districts to develop sustainable literacy programs for all students.
