Test Scores

Graduate Record Exam (GRE)

Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores must be submitted for the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical/Writing portions of the general test and must have been taken within the last five years. It is strongly recommended that the GRE be taken a minimum of eight weeks before your application deadline. Please keep in mind that your application file will be considered incomplete and may not be reviewed until after official GRE scores are received. The GRE test is not required for application to the following programs:

  • Certificate of Advanced Study (all programs)
  • DNP for Masters Prepared Nurses
  • Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Medical Imaging
  • Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing

GRE Waiver Request-The GRE requirement may be waived in certain disciplines, with program approval, if an applicant provides official documentation of having met one of the following criteria:

  1. Has taken an alternative test of preparedness for graduate-level studies acceptable to the MGH Institute, in its sole discretion. ; or 
  2. Has successfully completed, with a grade of B or better, two or more courses within the MGH Institute program to which he/she is applying (this does not include prerequisite courses), or
  3. Has already achieved a Master's degree or higher (or for Post-Professional Physical Therapy, ABPTS Board Certification in a specialty area)

To apply for a GRE Waiver, applicants must submit the GRE Waiver Request Form along with proper documentation. We strongly recommend that you submit this waiver well ahead of the application deadline to allow time to take the GRE in the event your request is denied.

Please note that the GRE waiver request option is not available for the following programs:

  • Entry-Level Doctor of Physical Therapy
  • Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Official results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) taken within the past two years, are required of all applicants whose native language is not English. The minimum score requirement is 213 (computer-based test), 79-80 (internet-based test), and 550 (paper-based test), which must be sent directly to the Institute by the Educational Testing Service (ETS).

This requirement is waived only if the applicant has received, or expects to receive prior to enrollment, an undergraduate or graduate degree from a college or university in any of the following countries: The United States of America, or New Zealand, and Canadian institutions where the language of instruction is English. A waiver may also be granted if a U.S. credentialing agency documents that the medium of instruction at the undergraduate or graduate institution where the degree was awarded was English.
