MGH Institute welcomes applications from individuals holding a Bachelor’s degree who seek to enter a career in health care; and from practicing nurses and physical therapists who want to develop as leaders within their professions.

Our professional staff provide information and answer questions you have during the admission and financial aid process, and ongoing information on tuition and fees.

Application Deadline

For Program Starting: Summer 2010
The Application Deadline is: December 1, 2009

You may submit an application for admission to PTCAS anytime between August 1, 2009, and December 1, 2009. We will begin to review applications after the December 1 deadline.

The Doctor of Physical Therapy program participates in the Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service (PTCAS). You must apply online through PTCAS.

Prerequisites

Degree

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Physical Therapy Observation

You must have some experience or exposure to varied types of physical therapy practice, with a minimum of 10 hours of volunteer, paid or observational experience. You will be asked to document your observation when you apply.

Courses

You also must have completed the following courses – prior to matriculation – with a grade of C or better:

  • Anatomy (1 semester, with lab) Human anatomy recommended, vertebrate or comparative anatomy accepted
  • Human Physiology (1 semester) May take one year of combined Anatomy-Physiology course to meet the anatomy and physiology requirements
  • Biology (1 semester, with lab)
  • Exercise Physiology
  • Chemistry (2 semesters, with lab)
  • Physics (2 semesters, with lab)
  • Developmental or Child Psychology (1 course)
  • Abnormal or General Psychology (1 course)
  • Statistics (including inferential statistics)

Applicants may have up to two prerequisite courses in progress the spring semester prior to matriculation.

Please note that you may be asked to submit mid-term reports for certain prerequisite courses. All prerequisite courses must be satisfactorily completed prior to matriculation. Prerequisite credit cannot be given for courses with a grade of Pass/Fail.

You may take prerequisite coursework at any U.S. college or university regionally accredited by one of the major accrediting bodies. Requests for prerequisite evaluations will be addressed in writing only.

Applicants who are currently in the process of completing prerequisite courses are still encouraged to apply.

You must complete the DPT Prerequisite Checklist and submit it directly to MGH Institute of Health Professions, not the PTCAS service.

Supporting Materials

GRE Scores

You must submit scores for the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical/Writing portions of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) general test, and have taken the GRE within the last five years.

Arrange for the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send your scores directly to the MGH Institute.

We strongly recommend that you take the GRE a minimum of eight weeks before the application deadline of December 1, 2009. Please keep in mind that your application file will be considered incomplete, and may not be reviewed until after official GRE scores are received.

The MGH Institute school code for the GRE is R3513.

Interview

A personal interview is required for those being considered for admission. Interviews are by invitation only.

Purpose of the interview:

  • For faculty to meet you and review your background and experience
  • For you to:
    • Meet our faculty and students
    • See our facilities
    • Ask questions about our program to determine if the Institute's program meets your needs

Invitations for interviews will be sent to qualified applicants between mid-December and mid-January. Interviews will be scheduled on Fridays and Saturdays in late January/early February at our campus in the Charlestown Navy Yard.

Applicants will be notified of admission decisions shortly after all interviews are complete.

Financial Aid

Do not wait until you've been accepted to the program to learn about financial aid options available. Contact our Financial Aid office as soon as you have applied to ensure that you will be able to take advantage of all options available. When applying for financial aid through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), please list the MGH Institute Federal School Code: G22316.

International Applicants

If you did not receive your undergraduate degree in the United States, you must have your transcripts evaluated by a U.S. credentialing agency.In addition, if your native language is not English, you must submit TOEFL scores. For details, see Information for International Students.

Please note: The Doctor of Physical Therapy degree is for students interested in attaining an Entry-Level DPT degree. If you are a foreign-trained physical therapist (physiotherapist) looking for an advanced degree, you should apply to our Master of Science in Physical Therapy program.

Other Application-Related Information

Application Review

Application review will begin after the December 1st deadline.

Applications received after December 1, 2009, may be reviewed at the discretion of the faculty, and only if seats remain available.

Each application is reviewed in its entirety independently by at least two members of the faculty in the Department of Physical Therapy.

Campus Visits

Please be sure to check upcoming information session dates.

The sessions typically occur once a month between September and July.
 
This is a great way to learn more about the program, and to meet faculty and staff members who will be available to answer questions regarding the application process, prerequisite courses and financial aid.
