Interdisciplinary Education

Teaching and Learning Certificate Overview

This certificate program is designed for experienced current or prospective health care educators -- clinical instructors, faculty, and preceptors -- to prepare you to teach health care students in both clinical and classroom settings.

The broad-based, interdisciplinary program is designed to create maximum flexibility for busy professionals. The program:

  • Offers both a 9-credit Certificate of Completion and a 15-credit Certificate of Advanced Study
  • Includes a new concentration in health care simulation
  • Is part-time and can start in any semester
  • Has all courses online and mentored practica can be arranged in your community

This program prepares health care clinicians to teach in academic and clinical settings. It provides learners with the educational principles needed to integrate their clinical acumen and knowledge with didactic and theoretical tools to teach others.

Enhancing Health Care Professionals' Expertise

The MGH Institute recognizes that teaching and learning occurs across a wide variety of settings and levels. The Teaching and Learning Certificates offer the opportunity to increase your effectiveness as an educator in clinical settings, brick and mortar classrooms, online classrooms, as well as in the lab.

As life-long learners, health care professionals find that formal and informal teaching and learning continues into post-professional and post-graduate life. Participants in this program build a knowledge base of educational principles and methodologies that they translate into teaching projects specific to their professional roles and interests.

The program takes advantage of the latest technologies for teaching health care professionals. For example, clinical simulation provides opportunities to learn, evaluate, and test new methods of care.

Teaching and Learning Certificate Options

There are two non-degree certificate options available:

Certificate of Completion:* 9 credits

This three-course sequence addresses basic concepts of teaching and learning, course design and student assessment, and teaching practicum. No application form is needed and there is no formal matriculation. Contact the Program Manager, and register for the term of your choice (see curriculum). Courses are to be taken in sequence.

For participants who choose not to continue, a Certificate of Completion will be issued at the successful completion of these courses. Participants interested in continuing for the Certificate of Advanced Studies may apply for non-degree admission (see below).

Both concentrations, Academic and Health Care Simulation, are offered for the Certificate of Completion.

* This option satisfies the National League for Nurses' three-course eligibility requirement to sit for the Certified Nurse Educator Examination.

Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS): 15 credits

This academic credential includes the curriculum from the 9-credit certificate and extends into areas of program evaluation and administration. A separate application is required for admission and matriculation into this option. See Application process and requirements.

Currently only the Academic concentration is offered for the CAS.

Concentrations

Traditional Academic Track

This course sequence (see curriculum) provides the essentials of developing a complete learning project, and culminates in either the teaching practicum for the Certificate of Completion, or the synthesis practicum for the CAS.

This option is ideal for health care professionals such as preceptors, clinical supervisores and faculty who wish to expand their general teaching skills and education-related competencies in the classroom, online, or in the clinical setting.

Health Care Simulation Track*

Recognizing that simulation represents a paradigm shift in health care education, this innovative concentration (see curriculum) addresses the increasing needs of faculty and clinical instructors to:

  • Develop competencies in simulation as an instructional tool in health care education, training and research
  • Improve simulation technology, educational methods, and practitioner assessment

* Graduates of the Harvard Macy Institute Program for Educators in Health Professions and the Institute for Medical Simulation have streamlined access to either the Certificate of Completion or the Certificate of Advanced Studies in this concentration. Please contact the Program Manager for further information.
