April 30: Celebrating Women in Leadership

The ceremonies marking the inauguration of Janis P. Bellack at the MGH Institute’s fifth president began on the evening of Wednesday, April 30, 2008.

More than 75 people attended the Celebrating Women in Leadership dinner, held in the third floor of the school’s main Catherine Filene Shouse Building at 36 1st Ave. in the Charlestown Navy Yard.

Former U.S. Social Security Administration commissioner Shirley S. Chater was the keynote speaker for the evening. She was introduced by Institute Trustee Matina S. Horner, President Emerita of Radcliffe College; and Honorary Trustee Alice F. Emerson, President Emerita of Wheaton College.

The event included several other area female university or college presidents and senior academic leaders, including Roxanne Mihal, dean of nurse education and health professions at Bunker Hill Community College, and a 1998 graduate of the MGH Institute.

May 1: Presidential Inauguration Reception

All hands were on deck on Thursday, May 1, as nearly 100 donors, community and health care leaders, and MGH Institute supporters turned out for the presidential reception at the USS Constitution Museum.
Institute Board of Trustees Chairman George Thibault and Massachusetts General Hospital President Peter Slavin addressed the audience, while new President Janis P. Bellack thanked everyone for their continued efforts on behalf of the school.

May 2: Inauguration Colloquium

It was cold and damp on the morning of Friday, May 2, but the more than 100 people gathered under a tent in front of the Commandant’s House were warmed hearing about MGH Institute’s strategic priorities as it enters its fourth decade as an academic affiliate of Massachusetts General Hospital. The topics discussed were:

  • “Growth and Innovation”: Edward H. O’Neil, PhD – Director, Center for the Health Professions, University of California-San Francisco;
  • “Interdisciplinary Education”: Susan B. Hassmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN – Senior Program Officer, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation;
  • “Research and Scholarship”: Robert E. Hillman, PhD, CCC-SLP – Co-Director and Research Director, Associate Professor, Center for Laryngeal Surgery and Voice Rehabilitation; Interim Academic Dean, MGH Institute;
  • “Diversity”: E. Lorraine Baugh, MS, RN – President and CEO, Lena Park Community Development Corporation; Trustee, MGH Institute; and
  • “Partners HealthCare Relationships”: James J. Mongan, MD – President and CEO, Partners HealthCare
