A Unique Role in Health Care

As an innovative and independent graduate school operating within the framework of the Partners HealthCare System – the largest integrated health care system in New England -- the MGH Institute is a progressive leader in developing comprehensive models of health care education. Many Partners entitities consistently rank at the top of the US News & World Report's annual Best Hospitals rankings.

The MGH Institute is an academic affiliate of the world-renowned Massachusetts General Hospital, the largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. Institute students and alumni can be found learning and working throughout the Partners system and beyond. The MGH, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, and Partners Home Care are the Institute's closest partners in clinical education.

Clinical Affiliations

The essence of an Institute education has always been the combination of theoretical academics with practical, clinical application. From their very first semester, students are offered clinical experiences at first-rate health care and education settings throughout New England and, increasingly, outside the region. The Institute partners with more than 600 clinical affiliates, including:

  • Community hospitals
  • Community health centers
  • Health and research-related industries
  • Home health care agencies
  • Major academic medical centers
  • Private practices
  • Rehabilitation hospitals and agencies
  • School-based clinics
Placements are carefully cultivated to provide students the best opportunity to practice what they have learned in the classroom. Clinical supervisors and preceptors earn tuition vouchers that can be used to attend classes at the Institute, and nursing preceptors can use the experience toward meeting recertification requirements as a nurse practitioner. A car may be required to access some clinical placements.

For more information about clinical affiliations, contact the Academic Dean at (617)726-8008. For more information about becoming a clinical supervisor or preceptor, contact one of the clinical education coordinators:
