President Janis P. Bellack announced today that Joia Mukherjee, MD, MPH, Chief Medical Officer of Partners In Health, will deliver the keynote address at the MGH Institute's 32nd Commencement Ceremony on Thursday, May 10, 2012.
Dr. Mukherjee is also Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine, and in the Division of Global Health Equity at the Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Partners In Health is a Boston-based, international non-profit organization dedicated to "providing a preferential option for the poor in health care," with clinical programs in Haiti, Rwanda, Burundi, Malawi, Lesotho, Peru, Mexico, Russia, Kazakhstan, and inner-city Boston.
As Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Mukherjee is involved in programmatic and clinical work to provide health care and reduce health disparities by developing community-based programs with local colleagues in those countries.
One of the defining features that separates Partners In Health from other non-govermental organizations is its commitment to hiring and training people who live in the communities where the organization works. Of the nearly 15,000 employees working for PIH, fewer than 150 are American.
Dr. Mukherjee also is Director of the Institute of Health and Social Justice, the advocacy arm of Partners In Health. She consults for the World Health Organization on the treatment of HIV and tuberculosis in developing countries and is a member of the Executive Board of Health Action AIDS, a campaign conducted with Physicians for Human Rights to engage the US health professional community in the international advocacy and education effort to stop the global AIDS pandemic. Her scholarly work focuses on the human rights aspect of HIV treatment and on the implementation of complex health interventions in resource-poor settings.
Dr. Mukherjee earned her medical degree from the University of Minnesota, and also holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. She trained in Infectious Disease, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics at Massachusetts General Hospital.
